QUILTER OF THE MONTH

Once upon a time, before rotary cutters, Jean and Grandma Hilda conspired to make a Christmas present quilt for her parents. Jean was 16. Every Saturday her parents thought she drove to Grandma’s house to “help”. The two conspirators actually constructed Jean’s first quilt with cardboard templates and a determination to create a wonderful Christmas surprise! The quilt was originally tied. With that first quilt project, Grandma Hilda nurtured Jean’s natural creativity and giving spirit. Years later Grandma Hilda took the quilt back, removed the ties, and quilted it by hand. This quilt is displayed in the window.

Through the years Jean has enjoyed making quilts and presenting them as gifts to her family and friends–in fact, Jean was able to retrieve several of her gifted projects that are on display in our window. Notice that she has worked with a variety of fabric styles. In her own words Jean states, “I enjoy challenges, even matching plaids!  I love the coziness of flannel and minky and crisp modern looking quilts.” Jean also loves to fussy cut fabrics and loves the challenge of small pieces.

Jean’s inspiration comes from following all things quilting on Instagram. Moda and Riley Blake designers also stimulate her creativity.  She reads quilting magazines for ideas and is inspired by Quilt Shops she visits.

Jean is also often inspired by designer Taunja Lynn with Carried Away Quilting on Etsy.  However, her

all-time favorite pattern designer is Lisa Bongean from Primitive Gatherings. Jean displays this inspiration in the red and white quilt pictured with this article. The pattern she used is called “Fair Isle” found in Sherrie Falls book, Winter Wonderland. Jean was inspired to make this red and white quilt last January when Lisa Bongean announced her “Red & White Quilt Challenge” contest. Jean entered the contest and created the quilt pictured. This beauty is currently on display at Primitive Gatherings Retreat Center in Larson, WI.

Inspired by Lisa Bongean, Jean’s favorite technique is to starch all fabrics for a project before cutting and piecing. Jean states emphatically that this technique is “a game changer!”. Flange binding is another technique she recommends. Even though Jean acknowledges that “not everyone is flange worthy”, she does tout, this technique is “worth the extra effort for eye-popping results”.

Jean’s quilting journey has awakened her love for notions–yes, she has turned away from cardboard templates! On Jean’s sewing room table these days are glass pins and her favorite

4 ½” X 8 ½” Creative Grids ruler. Jean also enjoys a 10” Sue Daley Designs pink rotating mat by Riley Blake and her Jim Holtz Mini Snips!
